I deal with pretty severe (in my opinion) hormonal symptoms. They started out as bearable but soon after I gave birth to my son- things seem to take a hard left.

In fact, it has gotten so bad that it seems like I feel bad my entire menstrual cycle.

There are some teas that I have found that take the edge off my symptoms. In this post, I will be talking about what they are and how they help.

First, a primer on my hormonal issues

I experience a lot of bad symptoms whenever there is a shift in my hormones. I have been feeling awful during my period a few days before I ovulate, the day of ovulating and 10 days before my period is to start for the past four cycles.

I pretty much have only had a couple days of feeling good the entire day lately. Yikes!

The following is a list of what I experience during my cycle:

  1. Nausea (moderate to severe)

  2. Bloating

  3. Headaches

  4. Shortness of breath (two days before I bleed)

  5. Heart palpitations

  6. Insomnia

  7. Abdominal cramps (the entire abdomen!)

  8. Ovary cramps

  9. Lower back aches

  10. Excess sadness

  11. Irritability

  12. Temperature regulation issues (four days before period)

There are probably more things but I can't think of them right now. I am sure you can see from this that I deal with a lot and it is not fun. I also have PCOS to top it all off.

The 10 great teas for PMS/PMDD/ovulation symptoms

The following is a list of teas that can help with the symptoms that come with hormonal shifts:

  1. Peppermint tea: Peppermint has been know for many years to help with nausea. This is one of my most prominent hormonal symptoms and having the tea helps take the edge off. You can make your own peppermint tea (actually called infusion I think) with leaves or get tea bags from various brands. I used the peppermint tea bags from Celestial Seasonings.

  2. Red raspberry leaf tea: Commonly thought of as a type of tea that sets off labor, it also may be able to help with other health-related things. These include morning/general sickness, sore throats and menstrual cramps. I use it for nausea and it also has really helped with the sore throats I get one day before my period.

  3. Fennel tea: This is great for nausea and stomach cramps. I just recently started using it and it honestly works even better than peppermint and red raspberry leaf tea. It is something I will have around all the time. You can make your own fennel tea or but tea bags of it like I did. A great brand if you choose the latter option is, Traditional Medicinals.

  4. Chamomile tea: There is some strong evidence that this plant can help with GI issues and mental tension. When my PMS irritability gets bad enough, I drink a couple cups of it. I have found that it actually does relax me. There are many brands that sell chamomile tea. I drink the Honey Vanilla Chamomile tea from Celestial Seasonings.

  5. Digest teas: There are plenty of tea companies that sell blends of tea that are specifically for digestion issues. If this is one of your issues at certain parts of your menstrual cycles, consider trying one of these teas. An example of a good one is , Eater's Digest by Traditional Medicinals.

  6. Lavender tea: Lavender has been shown to help with anxiety, stress, depression and menstrual cramps. While a lot of times it is used for scent purposes, it also can be drank in tea form. A great product to try is Traditional Medicinals Organic Chamomile and Lavender tea. It combines both the powers of chamomile and lavender together to possibly give a stronger effect against your hormonal symptoms.

  7. Cinnamon tea: Cinnamon has been shown to help with diarrhea which happens to some women a few days before their periods and/or during them. It also may help reduce sugar cravings if taken regularly. You can make your own hot drink with cinnamon or get some cinnamon tea bags (such as The Republic of Tea's Cinnamon Herbal Vietnamese Tea).

  8. Jasmine tea: This wonderful scent of this tea is said to help with one's mood. I for one love it and found that it takes the edge off of my irritability. Twinnings of London and Bigelow have great jasmine green tea products.

  9. CBD tea: This stuff seems to be all the rage for its alleged benefits. It is said to help with anxiety, depression, pain and possibly nausea. There are a few different companies that offer CBD in tea form or you can make it yourself. I have had success with this tea getting rid of my painful ovulation cramps that don't always respond to Tylenol.

  10. Bergamot tea: Bergamot is found in Earl Grey tea (type of black tea). It is said to help with anxiety, stress, depression and pain. If you are into other types of black tea, you may want to consider having Earl Grey around. Many tea companies carry this type of tea so you should have no trouble finding it!

There you have it!

These are teas that I (and probably many others) have tried to relieve some of my hormonal shift symptoms. If you are in need of options that may help during certain times in your menstrual cycle, I hope that the list I provided is useful to you.
