FAQ

1 /What is a learning community?

A learning community is a place where people are learning together- no matter what age and if they are working on the same thing. It is another way to say, "microschool."

2 /Where is Forward Leap located?

Forward Leap is located on the lower level of Laura's (director and guide) home. It has neutral tones so as not to overwhelm and is very cozy.

3 / What are the hours?

Forward Leap will be open from 7:00 AM- 5:30 PM and  will offer a 3-days a week and 5-days a week learning community. in 2025.

4/ Does Forward Leap accept children with disabilities?

Yes! We are an inclusive learning community with experience in working with children of all abilities. In fact, we feel this model of education is great for them! We accept and are really happy to have children who are neurodiverse or have medical issues.

Unfortunately, we can't accept students with severe behavioral issues.

5/ Is Forward Leap a religious school?

No, we are not. Forward Leap is secular when it comes to the curricula we provide. If a child is bringing in curricula that is religious- that is fine! They will still be supported in their learning.

6/ How flexible is the attendance at Forward Leap?

You are in charge of your child's education so it is up to you to decide when they will be here or not. This flexibility makes it great for illnesses. When a child gets sick they can stay home until they are actually better without there being risk of truancy.

7/ Will homework be assigned?

No homework will be assigned but I do ask for children to be read to and/or practice reading at home on a regular basis.

8/ Will there be grades and report cards?

 No.

9/ Will there be standardized testing?

In Minnesota, standardized testing is required of homeschoolers starting when a child is seven years old. To comply with this, we will be using the NWEA MAP Growth Test here or you can do one of your choosing at home.

10/ Will a gifted education plan be offered?

If a child is gifted in all or certain areas, then they will be given curriculum materials and work that is up to their level if not bringing in their own curricula.

11/ Where will the children go to school after they are done at Forward Leap?

This is a learning community and not really a school per say. They can go to the public schools, private schools or be homeschooled- wherever you want them to be.

12/ What about meals and snacks?

Food is expensive these days and Forward Leap is 100% tuition dependent. As we try to build up the Forward Leap learning community with high-quality items, it is asked that send them with lunch and snacks each day. No big, bulky lunch boxes, please.  There is a refrigerator and microwave available.

13/ Are the children actually just sitting and doing academics for the whole time?

No. The children will be doing their academic work but they can get up, stretch, play and take sensory breaks when need be.

14/ Will there be field trips?

A large van will be rented to go on field trips if possible. These trips would be a great opportunity for parents to volunteer to help out!

15/ Do you require vaccinations?

We require all of the regular vaccinations. You will be given an immunization form to fill out upon enrollment into Forward Leap.

16/ What should children bring each day?

They are to bring a change of clothes, lunch, snacks, a water bottle, tablet (if they are using their own) and books they are enjoying at home.

16/ What is the future of Forward Leap?

We hope that Forward Leap can become a well established, alternative education option in Rochester, MN with nine kids that attend from 8:00-5:30, Monday-Friday.
